You've probably seen the old comedy movies where the Murphy bed folds up with someone in it. From then to now - California to Asheville, NC : Back in 1894, in a tiny San Francisco apartment, bachelor William L. Murphy simply wanted to invite women into his one-room apartment. Society conventions of the time, however, frowned upon single women keeping company with a man where a bed was in sight. So Murphy invented a bed that disappeared. The name Murphy bed in general means a bed that stores out of site - typically in a cabinet or in a closet area. More Space Place Asheville opened its store in Asheville in 2002, bringing Murphy Beds and custom closets to the WNC area.
