Happy St. Patrick's Day - Asheville Green Theme Blog

In honor of St. Patrick’s Day this week I want to introduce you to a couple of downtown Asheville Businesses with a twist on a Green theme- just for fun. I shot these pictures today while downtown for a couple hours. I am in the mood for this holiday already – hopefully it is an indication of spring around the corner.

Green Man Brewing on Patton Avenue in Downtown Asheville AKA Jack of the Wood has a variety of locally brewed beers. The micro-brewery is located on Buxton Ave and features a tasting bar slyly called Dirty Jacks. I recently met Dennis and Ben and found them to be quite interesting, although neither of them are green - ha-ha. My favorite brew currently on tap is the Imperial Stout, a high gravity brew, but they are well known for their IPA.

Providing an array of organic coffees and teas as well as more sandwiches and quiches than you can eat in a month, the Green Sage Coffeehouse is a unique hang out. They open their doors to groups who are eco-minded for classes and speakers who are focusing on the green efforts in Asheville. They practice what they preach by boasting solar panels on the roof.

Let’s don’t just talk green, let’s add a little bling.  My last intro is to an old time favorite – Wick and Greene Jewelry also on Patton Avenue. Stop in and see Michael Greene, his family owned business has been providing Western North Carolina the finest jewelry since 1953.  I have enjoyed seeing the old timey clock on Patton Avenue my entire life and couldn’t resist this tribute.

And don’t forget – I’m green too - Amanda @ More Space Place Asheville! Selecting A Builder For Your Asheville Home

After working with many homeowners who are in the middle of selections regarding their new homes while making choices for their custom closets, I have some advice for selecting a builder. When you are ready to start your process for building a new home or remodel project keep these tips in mind for selecting a builder. Your home building experience will be happier if you select wisely.

Interview several builders when considering who you want to build your home. You will be spending several months to two years with the builder and you need to get along well. You want someone who is going to respond to your calls and requests with respect. Be cautious of a low-bid, remember the rule "You get what you pay for"!

Find builders that have experience constructing the size and style of home that you prefer - familiarity is good. We have excellent builders in the Asheville Area - check the Asheville Home Builders Association Directory or the Western North Carolina Green Building Council for a directory of Green Builders.

Ask for referrals from friends and neighbors who have recently built homes in Asheville - a happy client is good business.  These referrals will be strong sources as they have successfully completed the process and will also have advice for you.

The method of payment for the builders can vary - some have fixed pricing while others work on a percentage markup, this can make a big difference depending on how well you make decisions and your budget.

Many builders in Western North Carolina are offering bonus services now - like working closely with Architects or have design/build firms and some are offering design consultation as part of their home package.

It is reasonable to check backgrounds, Better Business Bureau, Home Builders Associations Affiliations, Banks and Insurance documents to confirm that your builder choice is sound in business. This checklist might be helpful as well.
